Baptism:  There are only two Biblical ordinances specified in the New Testament. The first is that which we call 'The Lord's Supper' or 'Holy Communion'. The second is that which is very clearly commanded: 'Repent and be baptised'.  (Acts2:37,38) Yes, for Christians repentance is our very first step into real Christian living.  It is the recognition that one is a sinner and that the only way of getting right with God is to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, to recognise that the due penalty for sin has been paid for by the death of Jesus Christ and that we are now confident of eternal salvation. [For notes on 'Infant Dedication' see here.]

And this is where we come to the second part of the command 'Repent and be Baptised'.  This is an outward and public declaration that we have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Friend.

For those who have committed their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, obedience to the command to be baptised is the only logical response.  However, baptism is not an easy step to take and requires clear careful counselling.  The incident we read of concerning Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch makes it all sound too easy.  (see Acts 8:26-39)  But that was an exceptional case of the Holy Spirit's working.

If you feel that you want to know more about being baptised the first step should be to talk to a reliable Pastor or Minister who understands this practice.  For a good clear book on the whole matter of baptism please read my review (click here) .
